Originally this festival occurred in the Assamese month of either Bohag or Jeth and was continued for seven days.

Now it may be performed in the month of Saon or in the month of Bhada and it may continues up to three days only.

Like Bihu of the non-tribals, the Baikho is an agricultural festival of the Rabha commu­nity of Assam.

They believe that Baikho is an agricultural deity (corn mother) and is worshipped with animal sacrifice and wine for the welfare of the crops. The tradition of ceremonial cattle – bathing in the manner of the non-tribals Assamese people and the putting of certain leaves in the cattle-shed in still customary among them.
